How to avoid bans working with Facebook Ads?
I’ve recently read an article on a well-known website about how to avoid bans when working with Facebook ads. The whole article boiled down to cases, what they block for, why it's unfair and a couple of screenshots from support.
So, I decided that people who don't get blocked should write about how to avoid being blocked.
Here I am =)
Below I'll define a few theses regarding dealing with bans, the ad platform policy and then give a couple of tips. I'm not going to talk about cloaking, workarounds and so on, this article is for the warm and fuzzy.
But, you know... To fight the darkness, you have to be in its shoes for a while.
So, let’s get it started/ let’s go
Thesis #1 - Anything can be slipped into Facebook
Thousands of ads with banned content are moderated on Facebook every day and affiliate marketers have already come up with a million tricky ways to promote this and work around the platform's algorithms. I'm sure most people come across scam ads, cryptocurrency ads, misleading ads, etc.
Thesis #2 – Anything can be blocked/banned on Facebook
It doesn't matter how many licences you have or how great the product and advertising is, anyone and anything can fall under the wrath of His Majesty Ban. Washing machines, tracksuits and even charities (even this, yes!) can be blocked. Sometimes this may not be due to Facebook's algorithms, but to behavioural factors of the selected audience. For example, you may get a report on post or feedback on a special form that you have a slow delivery.
Thesis #3 - Technical support won’t help you
In most cases, technical support managers have never run an advertising campaign themselves and are often not even well-versed in their own policy. Moreover, they don’t have the competence or even the functionality to help you unlock accounts, business manager or anything else. They only can send a request for you if for some reason this functionality isn’t available to you
We have finished the formal part and identified the necessary points. Now you know what it is and what to expect from it. Let's move on to the tips. There are a lot of them.
Tip #1 - Don't work with prohibited products
If you want to work calmly, without unnecessary nerves for you – don’t do what Facebook forbids. Read their excellent rulebook and never ever break it.
- But there are plenty of people that work with prohibited products
Indeed there are and they work. But we are talking about not being blocked, aren't we? For myself, I’ve made the choice to "sleep tight", so for a long time now my team and I haven’t had any worries about this issue at all. For ourselves and our clients, we stick to the rule "err on the side of caution”
Tip #2 - Partner access
There is a regular exchange of accesses on Facebook. During audits, I often notice that the buyers simply add their clients (or vice versa) to the business manager, give out the employee or admin role to the account. The problem with this approach is that it puts both sides at risk. If you don't want to suffer from your clients' accounts being blocked or if you are a client and don't want to worry about your business manager, just use partner access.
Tip #3 - Verification of Business Managers
The Business Manager is your Sanctus sanctorum. If it suffers, all accounts suffer. It took us a long time to verify documents in Business Manager (due to some Facebook issues) and when we succeeded, we noticed that most of the bans were gone. If you don't have the ability to verify documents, buy an already verified Business Manager. Yeah, it will cost you a little more, but it's worth it
Tip #4 - Add more than one person to the BM
With certain types of checking, Facebook can freeze your social account, but leave the campaign running. Or it may simply block your social account. but leave the BM untouched. In such a case, it is helpful to have a second social account or second person in the Business Manager who can continue even in the case of a similar situation.
Tip #5 – Diversification
This word isn’t only fashionable, but also useful. Even if you follow all the rules, don't think you're immortal and King Ban won't touch you. There may come and when this will happen and there will be no time to develop new accounts. As long as everything is ok, stock up a few verified BMs, advertising and social accounts. You can develop them a little in the meantime or keep them in stock. But trust me, it's better to have a rainy day reserve than... than not!
Tip #6 - Don't rush the warm-up
On this point I could actually write a separate article and maybe there will be, but I'm not sure. However, the bottom line is that when you decide to farm a new social account, remember to do it gently. Firstly, don't be predictable. Don't act on tried-and-true arbitrage schemes. Facebook has a neural net set up for this and it will track you down. Act like a real new user and then you won't get banned - add people as friends, like, comment. Don't wait after every action for 24 hours, like you were told in some arbitration article - act unpredictably. Run ad campaigns only when Facebook itself starts showing you ads. Work with anti-detect browsers. Play games, leave a couple of ad submissions. Run ads on behalf of the business page, then go into the ad account.
It took me a month for each social account, but none were banned. Perhaps, I should tell you how I did it after all, but a little later
Tip #7 - Security
One thing you definitely shouldn't neglect is security. At the very beginning of my career I had my accounts hacked, my social accounts blocked without the possibility of recovery. It was frustrating. So, put in two-factor authentication, make complex passwords, change them from time to time. In addition, Facebook respects accounts that are concerned about their security.
These are probably not all the tips that can be given, but for me they were the main ones that helped our team to get rid of bans completely. For over a year now we've forgotten about this problem at all. In this article I didn't want to go deep into details. I didn't talk about King-accounts, cloaking or how to buy accounts.
Only the basic stuff, but I hope it’s useful for you.
